HOOP HOUSE DREAMS

The summer of Hoop House Dreams begins this week at both Marshall High School in Chicago, Illinois and Western International High School in Detroit, Michigan! On Saturday, May 3rd, a fantastic group of students from Marshall High School and DePaul University joined forces for Vincentian Service Day. Working hand-in-hand they prepared the Learning Garden for an Eat What You Grow 30 Day Salad Crop of arugula, cilantro, dill, lettuce, mustard greens, radish, rainbow chard, and spinach. Seeds were donated by Chicago Public Schools (CPS) – Office of Student Health and Wellness. We thank Drew Thomas, CPS School Garden Coordinator for this kind donation!

As a special project, Al Southers, the Chair of the Peaceable Gardens Board, Dionne Montgomery and Maryna Smoliana, DePaul students, initiated filming for a Kickstarter Campaign to repair Marshall’s Hoop House. We will let you know when it goes online!

At the other end of I-94, in Detroit, Michigan, Youth Empowering Agricultural Health (YEAH) will be having a groundbreaking for their new Hoop House Garden on Friday, May 9th at 10:00am! Their Hoop House is sponsored by the Skillman Foundation and supported with technical assistance by Nifty Hoops, Greening of Detroit and Keep Detroit Growing. It will be built on the campus of Western International High School.

Year after year both of our cities live with the reality of violence. This image is often what is projected by the news media. Life Directions’ vision runs counter to this. Our passion is to encourage young adults to walk the “Way of Peacebuilding.” This is the vision we will be projecting in our new grow: LIFE Blog. Together we can revitalize our cities one garden, one Hoop House, and one teen at a time!
